What is required to be eligible to participate in high school athletics
Academic Eligibility
In order for a student to participate in games or competitions, the student athlete must be academically eligible. The MIAA states, a student must secure during the last marking period preceding the contest, a passing grade and full credit in the equivalent of four traditional year-long major courses. For all fall athletics, students are required to have passed and receive full credit for the equivalent of four traditional year long major courses (e.g. final grades, not quarter four grades determine fall athletics eligibility).
User Fee
There is a $200 User Fee for each sport (exceptions are $250 for Football, and $400 for Hockey.) The athletic user fee is non-refundable. Athletes who leave a team voluntarily or who are dropped from the team by the coach, athletic director, or principal for disciplinary or scholastic deficiencies are not eligible for a refund. An athlete who pays a fee and is cut from a team will have their fee applied to another sport or refunded in full. A student may not participate in athletics until user fees from prior seasons have been paid. All user fees must be paid (or payment plans/waivers established) within one week from the first day of practice or tryouts. Permissible penalties for non-payment include the loss of privilege to participate in extracurricular activities (per School Committee Policy JQ- 5/24/18).
Up to Date Physical
All athletes must have an up to date physical on file with the school nurse/athletic trainer before being allowed to tryout or participate in any sport. A physical is valid for 13 months from the date it was conducted. A student becomes ineligible to participate in practice or games when the physical expires. It is the responsibility of the student and parent to be sure they have an up to date physical. It is quite possible that there will be no reminder that your physical is set to expire.
